Research Summary:

I am currently developing methods to treat different musculoskeletal diseases using human mesenchymal stem cell spheroids and different biomaterials. I have also helped develop in vivo model of tendinopathy in the supraspinatus tendon.

The goal of this research is to develop an effective MSC-based therapy that maximizes therapeutic potential of cells to regenerate injured cartilage tissue. To do so, we will develop a multilayer technology that coats MSCs with a molecule that promotes chondrogenic differentiation in vitro or cell retention in an ex vivo cartilage defect site.

Biosketch:

I graduated from the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park in May 2010 with a Bachelors of Science degree in bioengineering. While at UMD, I conducted research in the Neuromuscular Bioengineering Laboratory and held a summer internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. I received the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers’ (ASABE) Scholarship in 2009 and 2010 for my outstanding academic achievements and extensive outreach activities in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the student chapter of ASABE. In 2011 and 2012, I was awarded honorable mention from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. I am currently in Georgia Tech's Training Program in Cellular and Tissue Engineering sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the NIH.

I became interested in stem cell and biomaterials research during my undergraduate coursework. Through my current research, I aspire to develop stem cell therapies that regenerate and reconstruct injured orthopeadic tissues. I hope that my training from the IGERT Stem Cell Biomanufacturing program will allow me to foster alternative treatment for clinical injuries of orthopeadic tissues using a stem cell and biomaterials approach.
