Research Summary:

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a cell population found in adult tissue that are capable of suppressing immune responses and inflammation. My project focuses on engineering MSC constructs that can be transplanted in the body to treat inflammation and immune diseases.

Josh's work is on the development of microencapsulation techniques as a means of manipulating the stem cell environment.  Additionally, he is working on projects in engineering the microenvironment of mesenchymal stem cell aggregates. 




Josh graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.    At CWRU, he worked in the lab of Dr. Knothe Tate.  His researched focused primarily on the influence of the mechanical environment of mesenchymal stem cells on cell morphology and function.  He also worked on developing a novel cell culture system to study stem cell response to mechanical cues in a 3D environment.  Josh is currently a first year graduate student in the Biomedical Engineering department at Georgia Tech.
