Research Summary:

For my Thesis research, I design and synthesize composite microparticles for delivery of growth factors to stem cell aggregates in order to induce controlled stem cell differentiation to specialized cell types. I aim to develop a library of microparticles (consisting of a polystyrene core and a hydrogel nano-particle shell) that are able to deliver growth factors based on size and charge specificity. Such a platform would enable the encapsulation and delivery of a variety of growth factors for controlled differentiation to various specialized cell types.

Biosketch:

I received my Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering (magna cum laude) from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in May 2011. While at Rose, I was a member of the engineering honors fraternity, Tau Beta Pi, and the chemical engineering honors fraternity, Omega Chi Epsilon. I was also a member of the chemistry professional society, Alpha Chi Sigma, for which I held the office of Recorder. During the summer, I researched at NIH, participated in an NSF REU program at Penn State, and I worked as a manufacturing engineer at Boston Scientific.
 

Currently, I am a graduate student at Georgia Institute of Technology in the Materials Science and Engineering department. My recent achievements include being awarded Georgia Tech’s Presidential Fellowship and the NSF IGERT fellowship.
 

Since commencing my graduate studies, I have become involved in the Women In Engineering program, which organizes outreach programs to encourage middle school and high school girls to pursue engineering degrees in college.
